Biomiq Co-Founder Reflects on Company’s Continued Innovation, Partnership, and Growth Into 2025
In this reflective piece, Biomiq Co-Founder and Managing Director, Robert Fuller, ushers in the year ahead by sharing his perspective on the company's transformative journey—from its core mission to becoming a leader in Canadian wound care innovation.
Through the success of PureCleanse™ and partnerships with leading healthcare institutions, Fuller shares his thoughts and reflections on Biomiq's commitment to innovation and advancing patient care while reducing healthcare costs across the country.
Our company was born out of a pressing need for advanced wound care solutions that could better serve patients and healthcare providers across Canada. With roots in the legacy of Sterasure Inc., where we first developed trusted relationships and GPO wound care contracts, we saw an opportunity to create something more specialized and responsive. Biomiq emerged as a dedicated entity focused on delivering transformative wound care solutions that meet the high standards of today's healthcare landscape and help to address both traditional and current problems facing healthcare professionals and patients.
Now, as a fully independent company with a laser focus on innovation, we're making strides not only in product development but also in building relationships with leading healthcare organizations and institutions, all while staying true to the vision that inspired us from day one.
What began as an effort to improve wound care has grown into a nationally recognized success story that continues to be written. Today, our flagship product, BIHOCL™ PureCleanse™ Antimicrobial Wound Cleansing Solution, is trusted across critical healthcare settings, from high-stakes hospital environments to community care programs. To date, this journey has been defined by innovation, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for patients, clinicians, and the healthcare system.
A National Presence and An International Impact
One of our proudest achievements has been seeing PureCleanse™ fully embraced by institutions like the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto—Ontario's largest hospital system and the third-ranked hospital in the world. UHN's decision to make PureCleanse™ their chosen hypochlorous acid solution is an added validation what we set out to achieve—providing a safe, effective product that meets the needs of both patients and clinicians. Seeing PureCleanse™ in the hands of nurses and doctors who value its impact reinforces our belief in the importance of this work.
In 2024 we were also honoured and energized that PureCleanse™ was used extensively in community wound care programs across Ontario and Nova Scotia. PureCleanse ™ becoming a key wound cleanser on the Ontario Health atHome formulary has been a highlight of this journey, and it continues to be inspiring to hear from community care professionals who witness every day how PureCleanse™ optimizes patient outcomes and reduces infection rates.
During this same period, we partnered with the Canada-Ukraine Foundation to donate over one (1) tonne of our newly launched PureCleanse™ STAT product—a single-use, quick-to-deploy, squeezable irrigation bottle of PureCleanse™ HOCl—to frontline hospitals in Ukraine which continue to use the product today in the treatment of acute wounds and for safe, effective surgical irrigation. I believe this donation strongly reflects our commitment to supporting advanced wound care in communities facing critical challenges, globally.
Beyond community care, national GPO contracts with HealthPro and Mohawk Medbuy/Plexxus have further expanded the reach and impact of our products, allowing us to bring safe, effective solutions to hospitals and clinics across Canada in a way that not only delivers results but helps make healthcare more sustainable.
Support from Leaders in Wound Care
Another milestone has been the enthusiastic support from key opinion leaders (KOLs) across the wound care field. When we introduced PureCleanse™ a few years ago, these impactful individuals championed its unique advantages: an extremely pure, extremely stable hypochlorous acid solution that clinicians can rely on for safe, effective, and efficient care. Their early support helped pave the way for broader adoption, fuelling momentum that's led to expanded use in various regions and healthcare settings.
The feedback from nurses and doctors who use PureCleanse™ with their patients several times daily has been deeply meaningful. Hearing clinicians say that PureCleanse™ has made a real difference in their work, enabling them to treat wounds effectively and sometimes faster than with traditional methods, is what drives us to keep innovating. Knowing that our products are making a tangible difference in patient care, while also helping reduce healthcare costs, strengthens our commitment to delivering excellence in every product we develop.
Advancing Innovation While Reducing the Cost of Care
At Biomiq, innovation is more than a buzzword; it's our way of life. While PureCleanse™ has been our impactful starting point, it's only the beginning. Each product we bring to market is developed with both the clinician and patient in mind and a singular goal reverberates across our team each time: to deliver tangible, measurable value to our healthcare system by advancing the quality and accessibility of patient care, and improving patient outcomes.
In our shared mission above, I mentioned access to care. It’s one reason I'm particularly proud of the impact we've had on reducing the cost of care across our country. By offering the only pure and stable hypochlorous acid solution manufactured in Canada, we're not just improving patient care; we're helping healthcare systems save on costs that would otherwise go to additional treatments and preventable hospital readmissions. These savings aren't just numbers—they represent tangible, positive change for Canadians and the healthcare system at large.
Pride in Our Canadian Roots and Local Manufacturing
Being a Canadian medical device company is central to who we are at Biomiq. We're proud to offer PureCleanse™ as a Made-in-Canada solution, with development and manufacturing rooted firmly in our home country. This local presence enables us to maintain strict quality control while being more responsive to the needs of Canadian healthcare providers and helping to keep the cost of care low for our healthcare system.
Our commitment to local manufacturing is strongly aligned with initiatives like Ontario's Building Ontario's Business Initiative (BOBI), and more importantly, it allows us to strengthen our Canadian supply chain, uphold the highest quality standards, and create solutions that address the specific challenges faced by our country's healthcare system.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on this journey, I see immense potential for the future. Our mission is clear: to provide innovative, cost-effective wound care solutions that support both patients and healthcare systems. The progress we've made towards these goals in these first years has been remarkable, but I truly believe we're only getting started. With every new partnership, every new clinician we work alongside, and every product we develop, we're building a stronger, more resilient healthcare future for Canada.
As we accelerate further into this new year, I’m energized by our mission and immensely grateful to everyone who has been a part of this journey—the incredible team at Biomiq, our manufacturing and distribution partners, and the many clinicians who trust and use our products every day. Together, we're making a lasting difference in patient care, and I couldn't be more proud to lead this mission forward in 2025 and beyond.
With gratitude,
Robert Fuller
